Thoughts on : “Microsoft to launch Windows 10X as a web-first OS without local Win32 app support”
Maybe these will just be what I originally hoped: Edgebooks with Windows 10 still exiting for a while until Windows 10X can run legacy apps in the same way that Chromebooks run Linux or Android Apps. As somebody who works for a college who is actively deploying Windows Virtual Desktops, Intune management, and getting into PowerApps for interal applications this kinda excites me the more I’m thinking about. This could be the cut-off that Microsoft needs to have modern mobile-focused operating system. Of course they could keep around the Windows 10 we know and love. I think this could be very useful in K-12 schools with Microsoft Teams for Education and with enterprise who is intersted in deploying thin-clients, but want it wrapped in familar technologies like the familiar Windows design language, Explorer, Edge, Microsoft Office, etc and deep integrates into Office365 and Azure services like Windows virtual desktop (Namely around the application delivery bits over having a full virtual desktop). I feel like dual-screens were a fun distraction, but COVID really laid bare that people still need computers and Microsoft is still going to need to support their own endpoints for a long, long time.
Aside: Could we just not call this “Windows” and have it be something else to cut down on the confusion and baggage that comes with the Windows name? In this case I just think its a liability because it sets undue expections and makes people think this is going to be a much heavier operating system that it will most likely end up.
