Thoughts: If it doesn’t work with Siri, it’s just not a smart home
I have been using HomeKit products for a few years now and really prefer it to using multiple apps on my iPhone. I have found most of the products that support HomeKit also support Alexa and Google Home so if you buy something with HomeKit it will work on just about everything else. I have some Google Home’s in my apartment they work well with my Hue Lights, Logitech Circle 2 security camera, and Echobee 3 thermostat. That being said, I mostly control my home through the Apple Home app. Its great having everything integrated into one application, being able to use voice commands via Siri on my phone, watch, tablet, laptop, and Homepod. One of my favorite things about the Home app is being able to invite others to use my Home app so when guests or pet sitters come over they have first-class access to my smart home gear. When my mother and sister went to a state football game a year ago my apartment was already lit and cooled for them by the time they got home late, even though I was out of town. Since its Apple and they respect my privacy, I’ve set it so that guests don’t have access outside of my wireless network. I love my family, but it prevents my younger siblings from pranking me with my Hue Lights late at night, especially during Halloween 👻 Overall good article and I advice others to do the same as well.
