iPhone 12 Pro and iPad Pro Feature Request: Studio Microphones
I’ve been thinking about getting the 16” MacBook Pro lately to replace my 15” MacBook Pro (2016) sometime next year and one of the things that stand out to me is the microphone system that Apple included in the new laptop. Apple calls it “Studio quality” and while that is debatable (as is what a ‘Pro’ device is at any given point I suppose), the reviewers seem to agree that its significantly better to the built-in microphone in previous Macs and is roughly equivalent to a Yeti Blue microphone and great if you are in a pinch and need a microphone to do recording or are traveling and want one less thing to worry about packing. When I travel I end up AirPods 2 to record audio and they leave much to be desired.
In the 2020, iPhone Pro and iPad Pro I would love a new microphone array so that one could reasonably podcast from these devices. When I go to Microsoft Ignite or home to my family I would really like to have a great microphone on my iPad Pro and iPhone to be able to podcast in a pinch. I would also like it if Apple fixed CoreAudio on iPadOS and iOS so that you can re-route audio from applications like Skype/Zoom/Hangouts. As much as I would like to use something like Anchor, the reality is my podcast cohost uses a Windows PC and I don’t like to use the Anchor app because the iPad Pro app is super limited right now. The next iPhone is rumored to change its design to echo the design of the iPad Pro with flat sides. I would love if they used that to put a better microphone array into the top and bottom of the phone.
I feel like Apple is always improving the “Pro” aspects of the iPhone Pro/iPad Pro and a better microphone array would definitely be useful to podcasters, video creators, reporters, students, businesspeople, or anybody who uses their iPhone or iPad as their primary computing devices.
