I agree. I think they realized years ago that maps were going to be important to mobile. Google has more of an incentive to pour more effort into it because they are a data-driven company, meaning the more data they have on you the better they can target ads to you. Apple is more interested in selling hardware. Maps is a means to sell hardware, but they don’t reap the same level of benefits from having hyper-accurate map data that Google does. They can make money back in the supply chain or getting you to buy that fancy Apple Watch band that you’ve been eying for a few months.
