This is definitely the biggest update to CarPlay EVER and it makes me really excited for the future of automobiles. I recently bought a 2022 Nissan Altima and CarPlay has been one of the best parts of my new car. We’re definitely in the beginning stages of automaker’s transition to electric vehicles and as part of that, the continued computation of the automobile. This new CarPlay is clearly built for ICE vehicles as well as EV’s from the dials seen in the demo and I think this is a good thing because not everything is going to be able to go straight to electric vehicles…I see it as a gradual transition to hybrid vehicles with more and more battery until the internal combustion engine is gone. This obviously is going to show up in the more expensive cars like Infiniti, BMW, Lexus, etc, but I am looking forward to seeing it work down the line. The top of the line Nissan Rogue is under $40K and it already has both a large Carplay 9" touchscreen screen in the center and another 10" screen that replaces the instrument cluster. Its going to be really cool to see how car interiors change over the next couple of years. Right now I’m not a fan of the vertical touchscreens, but maybe that will change if the same curved screens that showed up on TVs a couple of years ago and are starting to show up in smartphones work their way into the car. We’ll see, but I love how car makers will be able to bring their own style to the car interior while drivers will be able to customize their own set-up. Even on my Apple Watch, I end up using analog looking faces just as much as the digital ones. I love being able to change it up based off my mood and what I’m doing. I love that idea that I could do that with my car. When I’m feeling like being engaged in the drive, give me ALL the dials and gauges with the tap of the Sports mode button, but if I’m commuting show me my navigation map front and center. I think the possibilities for both automakers and drivers are endless if you look at all the customizations you can do with the Apple Watch. The widgets on the new CarPlay make me think of that. I’m really looking forward to seeing what comes of this and having it in my next car, hopefully an EV next time.
