Fantastic Friday Read: “New Android Coolwalk redesign finally enters public beta”

Automotive computing is about to get really interesting in the next couple of years as Apple CarPlay v2 and Android Auto are both going through pretty significant redesigns to reflect the direction that cars are going with multiple screens, deeper integration into the car’s climate & fuel systems, multiple screens, different screen orientations, panoramic screens, and more. Its interesting to me that Google is allowing car makers to customize Android Automotive, but keeping their infotainment experience consistent. Apple, on the other hand seems to be taking an Apple-watch approach to the model that the new CarPlay will feel like CarPlay across different cars, but like the Nike or Hermes Watchfaces, the brands will be able represent their own brand identity that way, but end-users should be able to change up display configurations with their own widgets, styles, gauges, colors, and more. The new Android Auto does look a lot more modern and I like the split-screen mode that it copies from the current Apple CarPlay. Its going to be a lot of fun to see how cars continue to evolve as they become more like smartphones on wheels as car platforms are designed with the transition to hybrids being the default option and eventually electric vehicles being more and more the norm.
